Transportation Everywhere, but not a bus to ride...

Little Ninny, Big City!

OK, so when I first got here, I was staying with Lumi in Bundang (soft b kind of like a p ... poondahng) A 5 minute walk from the school...BUT I live in a place called Nagwon-dong (dong=neighborhood) which is right in downtown seoul near the shopping and far away fromthe school. I ride the bus about 45 minutes in the morning (apparently accompanied by a brief sprint TO the bus station with my coworker regan) and about 1 to 1 1/2 hours depending on traffic in the evening. I don't mind the bus ride...time to study korean. Except that yesterday I had to stand the whole time. Blech! Now for some pictures of my first Korean transportation experiences...This was my entire goal for last saturday: ride the subway and take the bus by myself to work. I did it!!!

Funny shots by Lumina. The good news is that somethings never change...I still have a monsterous bag and it still has weird things in it...this time, one of my peanut butter hershey's kisses, brought over from the US of A melted on the heated wooden floor or Lumina's apartment and I was evidently hungry enough while waiting for the bus to eat it. Hmmmm...
A Bus. I ride the 5500-1 express bus from bundang into seoul. I have to flag the driver down to get him to stop. That entails standing in the middle of the road and physically forcing the bus over to the side. Once the driver has stopped, you have exactly 3.2 seconds to get on the steps of the bus before it leaves the dock. It's amazing for my abs.
Now for the subway. Please look at http://www.smrt.co.kr/english_smrt/cyberstation_smrt/cyberstation.jsp to understand what the subway system is like here. yeah. uh huh. easy.

Korea is MAGIC! BUT evidently, as depicted by the many caucasian looking Korean women on posters and billboards here, you are more magic if you look like whitey. Such a shame. Korean women are beautiful without crazy nose lengthening and eye crease creating surgeries.
Just let me point out that my blond hair makes me completely conspicuous here. If I get lost, I have to walk around the block a little bit so that I don't turn around and come right back down the way I came...you kinda can't miss the waygookin blond girl wandering through your back alley 2 or three times. Especially the alley with the scarey old men and women boiling chicken parts and drunk men peeing against the wall. This picture is deceiving. This is my new friend, not just some stranger on the subway. Koreans NEVER talk to you just while you are out doing your thing. In fact, other foreigners don't acknowledge that you are there either. It's a very strange thing to get used to, but it's going ok.

Snow in March and Other Unexpected Things

I have pictures to post, but I apparently have to do it at work since I can not figure out how to put it on this computer. AND I need to write this stuff down today so that I don't forget...Alie said that her favorite blogs are Emily Saxey Neaman and Lumina's, with no mention of mine...so I have to get cracking if I want to have the BESTEST blog ever. ARG...want to link to the girls' pages but forget how www.luminainfinite.blogspot.com and www.emilysfire.blogspot.com.

PS. I found this cool song called, "I started a Blog That Nobody Read". Someday when I am tech savvy I will post it here.

Ok, so today was the first day of school. kids kids everywhere and ohhhh I loved it. It was exactly what I needed and wanted. They are just so fun even though it was cacophony and chaos. Did you know that in Korea, they count the 9 months in the womb as your first year, so they are born 1 year old? Additionally, depending on your birthday and the start of the new year, you could get another year tacked on. Here in Korea, I am already 30. And that means that my kindergarteners who are 5 Korean age are really 4 and maybe even 3!!!! But I'm learning that this is what Korea is all about...nothing is really what it seems. Kind of like a very cool surprise around every corner.

I have one class in the afternoon school that is 3 boys who speak moderately good english. Today we made family trees...the boys had to put both sets of grandparents then mom and dad and then themselves and siblings and draw a picture of everyone. Joshua drew something that looked a little like E.T. where his maternal grandma should have been and then said to me, " my grandma looks...." struggling to find the english word for what he was trying to say. I assumed he was going to say "old" since he was drawing wrinkle after wrinkle on grandma's face. After quietly conferring with the other two boys, one of the other boys began describing the word to me (We have a strict "english only" rule in school) by saying, "it comes down from the sky, from the stars to earth" at which point I realized that Joshua was trying to tell me that his dear, sweet ajuman (grandma) looked like an ALIEN. I don't think I have laughed that hard in months...ahhhhh...I love korea!!!!

I'm intrigued by the emphasis placed on looks here. I wore my hair down today so it was super blond and when lumina told a few parents that I was a good teacher, they responded by telling her that I was pretty. I guess I should be grateful, but it's interesting that I've been requested by parents to teach their children simply because they "saw me" and I look good. I suppose this happens all over, but it seems much less cloaked here...I'm not quite sure what to think of it.

OH OH>..almost forgot, I am finally in my very own officetel! it's an office that has a bed, washer (no dryers in korea) a hot plate, microwave, mini fridge and bathroom. The bathroom is one of those all in one dealies...a shower head on the wall that you just turn on in the whole bathroom...so luxurious. Now I can pee on the toilet instead of in the shower if I must go! But I've been warned to make sure that the shower is turned off or I might get a nasty surprise when I go to wash my hands later.

Off to bed. Will try to post pictures tomorrow if I stay late at school. So much to show and tell!!!!

Ninny in Incheon Airport

my first official Korean meal. This is called a hoppang. It's doughy white bread with sweet red bean filling. I bought it at a convenience store called MiniStop.
And this is everything that I currently have in the world. All on a cart. Like a bag lady.

Though everything else in the world is upside down, I still have you, DC...only here, you must change your name...to CCL. LIGHT? like beer. Damnit, they've figured out that it's that addictive.

Why EVERYONE should fly Korean Air

Dear America,

This may come as a shock to you, but I've left you for someone new...KOREA!!!! I arrived finally finally finally after 1 month of hanging around portland waiting for my visa to come through. I shouldn't complain...although I was getting a bit antsy to leave, I really had an amazing time with my family.

AND NOW, I am in seoul. Bundang to be exact..that's where my school is and that's where my friend lumina, the original expat, lives. But wait, I'm getting ahead of myself. I know you want to hear about how I got from one end of the world to the other. The plane ride.

I thought it would be uneventful. I went to seattle with my dad and got on a 1:15 flight direct to seoul. It cost me $50 to take my extra heavy, extra suitcases and I was able to secure an exit row seat on the aisle. A dream come true, right???? Oh, well we knew there had to be something dramatic. I was watching a particularly stirring part of "dreamgirls" on the flight when an adorable korean air flight attendant who could have been earning some extra cash as a gangly model spilled a pot of boiling water on my feet. After flinging my food tray into the aisle and ripping my socks off while screaming ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, it turned out that the damage was minimal (thanks to the second pair of airline socks I had put on...coincidence or providence? I'll let you decide) . Two bags of ice, a DOCTOR, some sun-burn cream????and more than 15 (I counted) concerned stops to check on my feet with a flashlight and STILL they decided I needed additional first-aid. And that's when they ( I say they because there were THREE people) started wrapping. and wrapping. and wrapping. I was giggling like a wasted co-ed the whole time without anyone to share in my glee. And when they were done, I had more bandages on my feet than a double amputee. Just look...

Ah, it looks serious, doesn't it? Enough so that they hounded me for my address and phone number (which I shamefully did not even know)and kept sending a very cute male flight attendant to smooth things over in english. He told me that I could learn Korean quickly if I got a Korean boyfriend. I asked him in very quick and stealth english if the airline would provide one as compensation for my pain... I think he said yes... And how was my foot, really?

Totally and completely fine.

AHHHHH korea...I think we will get along just fine.

The Universe Must Weep Sometimes

http://www.deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,660195184,00.html
This has broken my heart today.
Broken by the grief of those who've lost love.
Broken by the pain that would lead to such senseless violence.
Broken by the condition of our gray world.
Broken by the loss of hope and increase in sorrow.
Broken by my inability to do more, to change more, to care less.

Who was this refugee child? What had he felt and seen and experienced in his short 18 years that would cause this sort of tragic leap? I truly cried when I read this because of the victims but also because this boy, the perpetrator of such a gruesome crime, was most likely a victim himself....victim of war and poverty and exodus. Dear world, our children are desperate!!!!! CAN WE NOT ALL DO JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE TO BRING THEM PEACE?????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I will not sit idly by. I will not separate myself from this story. I will wear myself out in this pursuit...to ease the burdens we place upon children even if just for a moment in time. I believe and I have work to do.

The One Blog Where I Don't Write About Anna Nicole

NO COMMENT. NO COMMENT. (that's what I'm telling all the press who keep calling and asking me what I think about the sad news of Ms. Smith's demise.)

So this is my niece, J. I've been watching her for a couple of days while I am here at my mom and dad's in portland and I have learned the reason for all desire to propagate the species:

ummmm....It's REALLY fun to make kids wear weird things and dance around all funny to entertain boring adults! With this new piece of knowledge, I plan to make my children look a little bit like bag ladies whenever possible simply for my own enjoyment. I had this really rad bib on her with this hat and crazy circus onsie and I guess my mom thought it was a bit much, but you can at least sort of get the idea. Plus she does this dance where she waves her hands around and hops up and down. Tomorrow, I'm going to see what happens when I wrap her up in a blanket and swing her around till she pukes...it was always so fun when we were kids!

OK, OK, I won't do it until she throws up....I mean it takes a lot of work to clean up applejuice vomit and now that I'm addicted to The Janice! Dickenson! Modeling! Agency! on the Oh! channel, I don't have time for such frivolity. Have you seen this show??? WE HAVE TO TALK. Now that I'm back at the rents with 200 channels of cable and no job, I've been reduced to my former transient self watching marathons of What Not To Wear and free movies on in-demand...(today's highlight: YENTL. Who knew that a young, bearded, yarmulka-wearing mandy patinkin could make this mormon girl sweat and sing along with barbra?) Anyway, I know it's gotten bad because up until today I have been secretely watching Janice ( a trashy, trashy modelling agency reality show) when I'm home with the tot during the day. But tonight, I started to get a little edgy and when faced with the choice of watching an edited version of "Something to Talk About" with the affable dennis quaid or a NEW EPISODE of Evil Evil Collagen Lipped Janice, I chose the latter. Mistake. My sister walked in the family room while I was endulging and my shame was made public and I realized that any show that you have to watch like it's porn should not be watched at all. Back to "Myth Busters" and "CSpan: BOOKATTACK!"

Actually, I think I will try to abstain from all television tomorrow. Frankly I think it's slowly killing me much like crystal light and spray butter. And besides, I really rather relish (great alliteration, no?) my high horse platform from the last three years. I need to be able to continue to say condescendingly, "Oh, no, I don't need to rush home on Monday night for a TELEVISION show. I don't really even know what you mean when you say, "Siler's Alive". I don't even HAVE television." please.

CH...CH...CH....CHANGES

Everything is changing. The world is in flux. I no longer live in Salt Lake City. I no longer work at the world wide land conservation non-profit. I no longer sign in to Normal girls using my hotmail account.

They just made this sort of monumental switch over to gmail here at blogger.com and if you thought sleeping on my mom and dad's couch for the next two weeks waiting for my Korean visa would throw me over the edge, you had no idea what screwing with my blog would do. I genuinely live in "overwhelm" these days so when I signed in and it took me 10 minutes to access my blog after jumping through a bit of a hoop to get a gmail account, I wanted to burst into tears and throw my computer across the room. I'm OK now. The shaking has subsided.

Quick life update. Talked to Adam today. That was fun since I hadn't heard from him since he went on a mystery trip to Brisbane and presumably got eaten by a croc. Glad he's alive and in the world.

Have been babysitting nieces and nephews during the days and prying sticky fingers off the keyboard as I try futilely (did you have any clue that word was spelled that way???) to convince the University of Pennsylvania that I was indeed a student at their school and they should indeed LET ME ORDER MY TRANSCRIPT online. I'm not kidding. I'm about to put down.

The transcript is for my application to grad school. I'm applying for a masters in international education from Drexel in philly. I thought about U of Pheonix online, but it hurts my feelings to think about writing that on my resume (no offense). Drexel has a decent online program and they actually care to see my transcripts before letting riffraff like me into their school. U of Phoenix patted me on the head and gave me a lollypop as they told me how to get financial aid.
I can say that because my dad was an instructor for UofP. 1 out of 1 O'Daly's agree. U of Phoenix is not for me. (the rhyming is the result of hanging out with 1 year olds all day).

I'm in between everything. I was so busy in my last weeks in SL that I felt a little like my worst version of myself. Grouchy, complainy, cold. Now I'm here in the middle of the old and the new and I feel a lot lost. Would you believe that going to the grocery store to pick up bread and diet coke is the only thing that has made me feel normal in the last 5 days? In a life now completely devoid of routine, that simple act gave me the semblence of self. Tomorrow I will start again. Annyeonghasseyo.

I Am Sorry I Am Leaving

I am sorry I am Leaving
I am sorry I must Go
How I wish you could taste the salt in my tears
Then you'd know, you would know...

How your valley's have held me captive
I've been taken by your dead sea
I long for that Green River to wash me away
And make me clean, make me clean

The voices of your spired city
Sing my name in distant dreams
And I would climb to the heights of your mountain in the skies
to set me free, set me free

Well, I came to you nothing but a child
following your light upon the hill
And I am going out a woman no more haunted by the past
You hold me still, you hold me still

And I am sorry I am leaving
I am sorry I must go
How I wish you could taste the salt in my tears,
Then you'd know. You Would Know.

Discoveries

I have a special treat for you today...this picture was rediscovered during my moving preparations

I'm pretty sure that this is the picture that prompted the generational move AWAY from perms. Please notice the hair...please just gaze for one moment at the long brown-ness of the hair and imagine the work that went into that coif. My mother told me once that I never washed it and after rediscovering this picture, I might actually have to agree with her. Even after all that, I still never could acheive the true wall o' bangs that Nancy Jorgenson had. What I don't really understand is my lumberjack shirt and why I wore it on picture day...I must have thought it was pretty hot. And the blue glasses. Oh those blue glasses...funny thing? I picked up my new glasses from costco last night and they are RED!!! Ninny reliving her adolescence? Perhaps, but this time I'm determined to wash my hair more than every three weeks.

Oh, and here's another fun "scanned" gem...my diploma. No NO, I'm not in the habit of gazing lovingly at the stupid thing (in fact it's been in an envelope in the bottom of a filing cabinet for the 8 years I've been out of school and I'm surprised I knew where it was) but I did have to send it korea...and when I pulled it out of the protective dust covering I noticed something odd...

UMMMMM....Does anyone else think that this looks fake???? I mean, can't they at least give it some kind of gold foily stamp thingy? Nice diversionary tactics with the latin, but latin is free...you'd think after $120,000, they could spring for a little metallic paint.

Drama Drama Toil and Trauma

I would just like to state for the record that I AM STRESSED OUT. To the max. No. beyond the max. So if you are looking for me to be reasonable, forget it. If you are hoping that I will be rational, WRONG. If you think I'm being selfish, I am. If you want me to think beyond myself, I can't. Three reasons I am stressed out:

1. I am moving to Korea.
I am leaving everyone and everything I know and going to a country where I do not speak the language or eat the food. I am selling all of my stuff. I am leaving a job where I have a desk and a name and comfortable responsibility and coworkers who like my general sense of retardation. They take it in stride when I say stupid stuff. I am leaving my family and friends who at least pretend to love me and do not feel it appropriate to tell me that I am fat or have acne most of the time. This stresses me out.

2. I am moving to Korea and some damn snowboarders making a video kept me up all night.
It's true. About three weeks ago, I couldn't get into my parking spot because some enterprising young wippersnappers with pants around their ankles (which, somebody help me, pants have the goal of making the wearer's legs look positively miniature? Like midgets on purpose? AND WHAT HOLDS THEM UP? And does what holds them up hurt for the holding them up? That's all I want to know.)had built a ramp and were sliding dangerously on the ramp above my parking spot, and trying to LAND the trick on some snow they had shoveled into my spot. They were filming this so I played cool. I mean, I have a brother who was a skater and I'm down with inventive ways to make money. In the end, the snowboarding riffraff were delighted by my coolness and waddled over to thank me. They even shoveled the snow out of my spot.

What I'm not down with is waking up at 1 am to the sound of a generator chugging away and a loud voice saying 3, 2, 1 and then what sounded like a board sliding down the ramp, hitting the top of my car and then slamming into the concrete below. I must have the ears and the imagination of a bat (although I don't know what a bat's imagination is like) because immediately upon hearing that sound last night, I startled out of bed POSITIVELY sure that what I just described was happening. And DAMNIT, if my car was being used....So I rushed outside in my underpants and boots to discover that YES, they were filming and YES, they had reinforced ye old ramp, but this time they were sliding down the ramp and doing a side thingy on the wall above my car and falling (they would say "landing") on some snow next to my car. So I yell to the "photographer" DUDE, DUDE...he ignores me. So I yell louder, HEY! That finally got his attention and I screamed, "Is that my car??????" He said they weren't near my car but I would have none of it. I let him know under no uncertain terms were they to screw up my car or I was going to be.....PISSED. That's right. I mustered a big fat "PISSED". That's like threatening to kill someone with a banana. hard core. I stomped back into the house kind of annoyed that I hadn't said something angrier to the men with midget pants. BUT somehow it worked and I was finally able to sleep for like 5 hours. I don't do well on little sleep. And my car was fine in the morning.

3. I'm MOVING TO effing KOREA (did I mention that part?) and I just had mouth surgery.
Ok, so you get the whole moving thing, but I really need to reiterate that I do not handle being sick well. Come on, you and I have been together for over a year now, YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT ME. Remember iritis? yeah. So I'm a baby but being sick makes me anxious and nervous. And it adds to my general pissy, selfishness. But honestly, you're going to break up with me over that?

I need to sleep. Hopefully, barring any snowboarding incidents tonight, I will be a happier person tomorrow, far far away from the drama of today.

Face the Size of Montana

This is me today:
Maybe I don't look any different to you, but if you look closely you will see what appear to be cottonballs stuffed into my stage right cheek...it's not cottonballs. It's my face. I had oral surgery to correct an infection in my tooth root. I don't really have to have the icepack secured to my head, but it makes for a better photo and more justification for my sad whining. Don't I look sad and pathetic? Don't I look tragic? Don't you want to bring me a "get well milkshake"?

This is one in a series of weird doctors appointments I am trying to finish up before I leave the US. You wouldn't believe how many things you need to do to move to another country. Sell all your stuff, put the stuff you don't sell somewhere, get new glasses, say goodbye to everyone, go to seattle to get a visa from the Korean Consulate, finish your taxes, learn another language, buy pants, shoes and bras (because evidently I will not be able to find anything that fits me in my new skinny country), lay on your couch as much as possible before your house is no longer your house anymore, go through all your papers and throw away stuff you really don't need to keep....the list goes on and on. And I'm starting to feel anxious and overwhelmed like how you want to barf right before the final round of a karaoke contest. I'm less than a month away from leaving salt lake. Weird.

Tongue Tied hasseyo

I've been trying to learn korean but I'm afraid that like most projects I undertake, I am running out of motivational steam. Mostly because, whine whine WHINE...IT"S HARD!!!! My sweet friend carolynn has been ushering me through a children's fairy tale about a princess weaver and I am SOOOOO frustrated because not only can I not understand a thing that I am "reading" in the anime style book, I can't really pronounce anything either and I DON'T EVEN LIKE WEAVER PRINCESSES! (By the way, the word only slightly means princess...it probably has 12 other meanings that I can't comprehend with my american pea brain...)

The other night C and I met at Salt Lake Roasting company and it took me 1 1/2 hours to read 5 lines. Not even a whole page. It's really and truly humbling to feel so completely inept at something that I've been so amazingly attached to my whole life. Words have created the bulk of my identity. When I was a gawky, socially retarded pre-teen, I drowned my sorrows in babysitter club books, saving up my money and buying 4 books at a time and reading them all within 2 days. I was the annoying kid who corrected your grammar and knew the meaning of the word "erudite" on standardized tests. I had(have?) a massively evil tongue and used words to fight, hurt, comfort, define...They have always been my main mode of power. And in a new, distant language I am powerless. I am quiet. I am small. I feel useless. I can't even tell you what happens to the weaver princess let alone write poetry and express my personality effectively.

I was walking home on South Temple reading the signs on buildings the other day and I realized that I have been taking all this reading for granted. In less than two months, I won't be able to easily read ANYTHING.

I realize that all this thinking about language is a luxury. There are millions who can not read even their first language let alone a second one. There are refugees who are thrust by violence into new cultures and new languages with new alphabets every moment. They learn because they must to survive. Mine is certainly not such a dire situation, but I have goals...I want to be IN korean culture as much as possible and that means learning the language. sigh. I guess it also means ingesting a huge piece of humble pie and adopting a more tenacious attitude about my linguistic pursuits... (it also means using as many of my big words as possible before being reduced to hand gestures and grossly exaggerated facial expressions to match my monosyllabic grammar..."must...have...drink...gim chi...is....make...me...dead!!!!")

Playing House: The Talk

AKA The Talk I Gave In Sacrament Meeting Where I Voluntarily Discuss The Law of Chastity or "WHAT WAS I SMOKING?"

Every summer my mom created a playhouse on the back porch. It was practically real to a 6 year old. It had a kitchen, a bedroom and the piece de resistance…a “REAL” couch made out of cardboard and pillows. I spent the summers of my childhood hanging doll clothes up on the clothes line, washing pretend dishes and yelling at my brothers to go to work!!!! and make more money !!!!for our 3 crying children. It was heavenly. Sadly, the demise of the playhouse came when we forgot to clean up the lik-m-aid our “family” had for dinner one night and an ant infestation caused the health board, also known as my parents, to shut ‘er down.

Years later, I went to college far from home and settled into my first “REAL” apartment. I still remember how very grown up I felt when I put up my Depeche Mode posters and Christmas “mood lighting” for the first time. It felt real to me even if my furniture was still mainly made of crates and cardboard boxes. But on occasion when I would light an oven mit on fire while watching america’s funniest home videos or find a dust covered piece of clothing under the unmade bed, I would have the sinking suspicion that I was really only playing house.

Even now, over 10 years since that first apartment, I think often about the concept of playing house. Maybe you are like me when you read the proclamation to the world about the family and feel a little like we are faking it… just making due right now as we wait for the husband, the wife, the babies, the furniture not made of plastic…

One of my favorite scriptures is found in Alma “All is as one day with God and time only is measured unto men.” We are the only ones holding on to this artificial timeline for when our real lives begin. I’m sure that if we asked Heavenly Father he would tell us that we are already living REAL LIVES if we are working on our relationship with the Savior and moving closer to understanding our divine nature. But still there are some ways in which the analogy of “playing house” is helpful.

Have you watched kids play house? They are boundless, they have all power to do ANYTHING. They don’t limit themselves and their ability. Remember how when you played house you had a job, took care of 5 kids and could FLY??? The proclamation states “All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny.” We are STILL boundless in our divinity as children of God. Our nature is powerful and divine and we can do all things that we are asked! If we choose too, we can tap into that power and energy now to work harder for the things of God. We do not need to limit ourselves or our missions. Play HOUSE! Acknowledge your innate capability as a child of Heavenly parents!

Another cool thing that happens when kids play house: They imitate the behaviors of those who are closest to them…If we believe that “Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ.” We must start to build or continue to build that foundation for our future happiness by choosing to let the Savior be a greater part of our current lives. We must learn to imitate or emulate Him in everyway. Want to be happy? Want to find peace and have joy? Play House!

When we were kids, playing house was sort of practice or preparation for the future. We can still prepare today… In the proclamation to the world we learn that “successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work and wholesome recreational activities.” I recently had an experience with a group of friends in which one friend revealed that she was struggling with some really deep emotional pain. We knelt down together and petitioned our heavenly father in unified prayer for relief and understanding and comfort for our sister and I knew at that moment that I was closer to my friends, closer to the savior and one step closer to being the kind of mother and wife that I hope to someday be. And here is the truth. We might not have kids yet, but all of the characteristics that are required for a happy future family life can be developed and practiced NOW as we “play family” in our personal relationships and friendships. Create families. Be a family. Play house!

When I get a little bummed that my mission companion has 4 kids and I have none, I think about how silly her husband is and if that doesn’t work, then I remember Goonies…You know that part in the wishing well when everyone wants to quit and get pulled up by Troy’s bucket and Mikey reminds them, “It’s their time up there…but down here…this is our time.” I testify that this is our time down here and it is a gift from a loving and wise Heavenly Father. A time to figure out who we are and how we fit into his plan. We will NOT HAVE TIME TO WASTE when our children finally come to us. They are the great ones. They will probably already know who they are and why they are here…they need us to be firm in our understanding of the Savior and the gospel so that we can guide them.

Thinking about future children reminds me that there are some dangerous ways that we can play house as single members of the church. The proclamation on the family is full of amazing truths and practical “how to’s” about building a righteous family in Zion. It also plainly clarifies misguided ideas about procreation and puts forth powerful warnings about the misuse of our procreative energy. “We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife. We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of it’s importance in God’s eternal plan.”

Elder Oaks quote “ The power to create mortal life is the most exalted power God has given his children. Its use was mandated in the first commandment, but another important commandment was given to forbid it’s misuse. The emphasis we place on the law of chastity is explained by our understanding of the purpose of our procreative powers in the accomplishment of God’s plan.

The expression of our procreative powers is pleasing to God, but he has commanded that this be confined within the relationship of marriage. President Spencer W. Kimball taught that ‘in the context of lawful marriage, the intimacy of sexual relations is right and divinely approved. There is nothing unholy or degrading about sexuality in itself, for by that means men and women join in a process of creation and in an expression of love.”

Outside the bonds of marriage, all uses of the procreative power are to one degree or another a sinful, degrading perversion of the most divine attribute of men and women.”

It is natural and OK to want the full benefits of married life. But just as we can trust heavenly father to be keenly aware of our righteous desire to create families…satan too understands and manipulates it in myriad ways. Telling us that we can’t really ever have the real thing…so we might as well accept the imitation while it’s still available. Give up. Give in. There is no other way. Settle for a couch made of cardboard boxes and lik-m-aid for dinner…

This train of thought can seem completely rational. I mean, we’ve watched an entire society embrace it, so it must have some power of persuasion… but it is not true.
BROTHERS AND SISTERS…THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER WAY. We believe in a Father in Heaven who provides for his children, who showers us with miracles if we’ll open our eyes to see. Moroni 7:27-29 Hopefully we are able to say as Nephi did “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded for I know that he giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.” WE DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT SATAN’s PATHETIC IMITATIONS. If you don’t have hope that something real exists for you, seek guidance from the one who knows you best…ask him to give you enough hope to sustain you. Ask him to help you understand the Atonement and Christ and your role in this great plan. Moroni 7:41

I am intrigued by the word PROCLAMATION. To Proclaim something means to announce it officially and publicly. The word comes from a latin root of Pro meaning forward and claim to cry out. Proclaiming is active! I’m sure there are some bad proclamations, but in this case, I like to imagine the heavens shouting for joy at the sanctity of family!

It’s Christmas, so of course I have been thinking about the Savior and his earthly family. I imagine that Mary and Joseph spent a great deal of time cultivating their personal relationship with diety in order to fulfill their amazing familial mission on this earth. No doubt Mary spent a few childhood hours playing house and practicing for her role as a mother. May we all think about the best and good ways to play house as we read the proclamation from our God to the world about families.
